Liberia: New Handbook for ASM Miners - Working Safely to Protect People & the Environment
In December 2021, Liberia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched the country's first ASM Handbook targeting miners, their associations and communities impacted by mining. Developed with EGP's support, the Handbook is the result of a collaborative and multi-stakeholder process involving Civil Society Organizations, ASM Miners and Associations, Liberia’s Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection, and the country’s independent National Commission on Human Rights.
"The handbook, the first of its kind in Liberia, is expected to provide miners with much needed guidance and support for understanding safe mining practices and regulations around mining. The publication will help promote respect for human rights and environmental protection" - Abraham Tumbey, EGP focal point in UNDP Liberia.
