To strengthen citizens’ ability to analyze and monitor mining companies’ environmental and social management plans, a capacity-building workshop for civil society actors in the provinces of Haut Katanga and Lualaba was organised in the city of Likasi in December 2025. The workshop supported participants in developing a roadmap for citizen‑led analysis aimed at increasing transparency in the mining sector in southern DR Congo.
The workshop was organized by UNDP Kinshasa and facilitated by Professor Arthur Kaniki Tshamala from the University of Lubumbashi. Representatives from 30 different organizations took part, and the discussions generated strong engagement and concrete ideas for enhanced community monitoring.
“The workshop was very well received. Participants were deeply engaged and clearly recognized its relevance to their own environments. Implementing the roadmap is an important first step toward addressing environmental challenges in mining areas” says Philemon Balolebwami Cishesa, UNDP Kinshasa.
The next step is to put these roadmaps into action. Developed by civil society organizations in Haut Katanga and Lualaba, the roadmaps outline concrete objectives and measures, each with a designated person responsible for implementation. Moving forward, resources will need to be mobilized, and progress closely monitored to ensure effective delivery.
