Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile together hold over 60 % of the world’s lithium reserves. In October representatives from the three countries met a high-level summit in Salta to discuss sustainable practices in lithium extraction and its role in the global energy transition.
The summit brought together government representatives, environmental experts, and industry leaders to discuss sustainable practices in lithium extraction and its role in the global energy transition.
Key topics on the agenda included data transparency within the Escazu Agreement, challenges faced by the different actors, lithium extraction at regional and local level, responsible mining practices, among others. The summit served as a platform for exchanging knowledge and creating actionable strategies that balance economic growth with social inclusion and environmental preservation.
The dialogue helped to narrow down and clarify all the main challenges related to lithium mining in the region and to discuss future options. It became very clear that the most important factors are:
- The need to research and understand the hydrological dynamics of the region and thus provide data to create transparent processes using different tools. This should be done through regional cooperation where investigations are done from a basin perspective and not from individual salt lakes perspectives.
- The need to systematize transparency frameworks in decision-making processes and during operations in order to achieve high environmental and social standards in industry, which in turn contributes to the region's skills and competitiveness development
The participants focused on harmonizing environmental and participatory standards, advancing regional cooperation, and ensuring that local communities benefit from this essential resource.
