The joint Swedish Environmental Protection Agency – UNDP Environmental Governance Programme (EGP) organized a free online course on mining governance in collaboration with the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) from 2019 to 2021. The training course was designed to support government officials and other stakeholders in applying core sustainability concepts, and human-rights based approaches and tools needed to improve the environmental and social governance of the mining sector in various country contexts.
Increasingly government authorities, environmental and human rights defenders, and mining companies require more than a technical knowledge of the mining sector to do their job well. They need a broad understanding of the economic, environmental, social and human rights issues at every stage of the mining cycle and tools to manage them.
Responding to this growing demand, the course targeted authorities and stakeholders involved in the regulation of the mining industry, including its environmental, social and human rights impacts, such as officials working in social welfare, women, children, indigenous peoples, and minorities. The course also provided guidance to civil society representatives, human rights and environmental defenders, indigenous peoples and their representatives and other development partners and practitioners.
The course helped over 2,000 participants in identifying international frameworks and concepts on sustainable development relevant to the mining sector and new approaches and tools to be used to integrate environmental, social and human rights protection into the mining cycle. It also provided tools to guarantee the participation of affected communities in decision- making process related to mining licensing and governance.
The course is structured into three modules and can be completed in one day.

The training course draws on the EGP flagship publication on Extracting Good Practices: A Guide for Governments and Partners to Integrate Environment and Human Rights into the Governance of the Mining Sector, which was jointly produced with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
The EGP is a joint Sweden-UNDP initiative that supports countries to integrate environmental and human rights protection into the governance of the mining sector. Launched in 2014, the EGP provides targeted support to the governments of Colombia, Kenya, Mongolia and Mozambique, as well as broader support to a global community of practice across all regions, including through initiatives such as this course.
