The EGP, in partnership with IGF, convened an interactive session on 'Imagining the Future of Mining: Mapping and Considering Gender Impacts, Gaps and Policy Responses to Support Progress on the SDGs' at the Annual General Meeting of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF).
This participatory and interactive session focused on how governments can identify and address gender gaps related to mining. Following presentations from the World Bank, Government of Peru and Natural Resource Governance Institute, delegates worked in groups to prioritize a series of cards, describing the gendered impacts of mining. After engaging discussions, participants ranked the following impacts as those of particular importance:
EGP and IGF are taking forward these results as an input for developing training and awareness building for how governments can address these issues in their mining policies.
The EGP was represented at several events and meetings during the Conference of the Parties (COP14) of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. EGP experiences were highlighted through a joint Swedish Environmental Protection Agency-UNDP panel discussion on Mainstreaming Biodiversity in the Mining Sector for Sustainable Development on November 23, 2018. The panel is part of the 2018 Biodiversity Law & Governance Day organized during COP14.
The Biodiversity Law & Governance Day seeks to facilitate dialogue and action between the Convention's Parties, Observers and stakeholders. The event is an initiative of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law and the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat, together with UNDP, UN-Environment, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the International Development Law Organization.
Involving citizens in the environmental monitoring process is a powerful tool to reduce environmental risks and social conflicts. Establishing Participatory Environmental Monitoring Committees (PEMCs) gives citizens and communities voice and power to influence decisions that affect their lives and their future.
The EGP has recently supported a Regional Workshop in Panama on Participatory Environmental Governance for Sustainable Natural Resources Management in the Latin American and Caribbean Region, with a focus on PEMCs. The EGP is also supporting the creation of PEMCs in Mozambique.
The 2018 EGP Annual Global Workshop was held on October 17-19 at the John Knox International Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.
The workshop brought together the four EGP programme countries, namely: Colombia, Mongolia, Mozambique and Kenya, to share updates, and reflect on results, good practices and lessons learned from both the EGP and partner initiatives, including validation of findings from the EGP external evaluation.
An external evaluation of the EGP was conducted by Professional Management. The findings and recommendations were presented during the workshop, including the following:
The EGP has launched summary versions of its flagship publication translated into the national languages of the programme countries: Colombia, Kenya, Mongolia, and Mozambique.
The executive summary (23 pages) of Extracting Good Practices: A Guide for Governments and Partners to Integrate Environment and Human Rights into the Governance of the Mining Sector is now available in:
The lead author of the publication, Margaret Wachenfeld, conducted a Global Guide Quiz during the EGP Annual Global Workshop to assess the familiarity of the programme countries with the guide. The quiz is available here.
The EGP has partnered with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in the development of an online training course version of the Global Guide.
The course will support governments and other stakeholders to identify approaches and tools used to integrate environmental, social and human rights protection into the governance of the mining cycle.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and UNDP launched in 2014 the Environmental Governance Programme (EGP) for Sustainable Natural Resource Management, focusing on the mining sector.
The EGP supports countries to integrate environment and human rights into the governance of the mining sector.
