Our annual global workshop will be held on October 17-19, 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The workshop will be held back to back with the 14th Annual General Meeting of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals, and Sustainable Development (IGF-AGM).
The EGP session at the Annual General Meeting of the IGF will focus on how governments can address gender mainstreaming in their mining governance and policy processes.
This EGP session is convened by the Swedish EPA and UNDP and will include presentations from the Natural Resource Governance Institute and the World Bank. It will seek delegates’ input towards the development of a gender governance tool for the mining sector.
UNDP and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency are co-organizing a side-event at the United Nations General Assembly to advance the New York Declaration on Forests. It will be held on 25 September at the Scandinavian House in New York City.
This event is also supported by the Swedish Geological AB, the World Bank, the NY Declaration on Forests, PROFOR, Levin Sources, Fauna & Flora International, and the CDP.
The Workshop on Environmental Governance of the Mining Sector - Putting Policies into Practice was held in Kwale, Kenya on May 15-17, 2018.
The workshop focused on the recent assessments of mining sector conducted by the EGP, namely: the Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) in Kenya, and the Rule of Law in Public Administration (ROLPAM) in Mozambique.
The Kwale Workshop brought together key stakeholders from the government, civil society and the private sector who have a delegated role in the environmental governance of the mining sector in Kenya and Mozambique.
It was a joint initiative of the National Environment Management Authority of Kenya, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and UNDP.
The growing impact of mining on communities makes environmental governance an urgent priority.
UNDP Kenya notes that the prospects for the mining sector are promising, but there is need for expert opinion to guide consensus on the sharing of the benefits between local communities and the government.
Extracting Good Practices: A Guide for Governments and Partners to Integrate Environment and Human Rights into the Governance of the Mining Sector is a flagship publication of the Environmental Governance Programme.
This joint Guide by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and UNDP seeks to support governments and other stakeholders to better manage the environmental and social aspects of mining, in a way that rebalances relations in favour of more just and sustainable outcomes for local communities.
As the demand for metals and minerals continues to grow, greater efforts are needed to protect human rights as well as the biodiversity and ecosystems on which local communities and society more broadly depend.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the United Nations Development Programme jointly launched the Environmental Governance Programme (EGP) for Sustainable Natural Resource Management, focusing on the mining sector, in 2014.
Using the nexus between the environment and human rights as a lens, the EGP supports governments to integrate environment and human rights into the governance of the mining sector.
The EGP currently provides targeted support to four countries: Colombia, Kenya, Mongolia, and Mozambique.
