Last year, the programme facilitated a series of PEM training workshops with national and subnational governmental authorities and indigenous communities. These workshops were organised in virtual mode and in the resource-rich Province of Jujuy under a strategic partnership between the EGP, the Secretariat of Indigenous Peoples of the Province of Jujuy, and Argentina’s Institute of Intercultural Higher Education (IESI).
“The EGP has inspired and awakened an interest among people in local communities to participate in environmental monitoring”, explains Sonia Ochoa, IESI Director in San Salvador de Jujuy.
The training workshops have renewed dialogue and cooperation between stakeholders involved in the mining process. The activities hold great potential to help address conflicts, mitigate environmental challenges, and address human rights issues promptly and sustainably.
When the EGP initiated its operations in Argentina in 2020, there was a lack of knowledge and capacity for PEM approaches. Moreover, local indigenous communities were not involved in mining governance processes due to the lack of instruments, guidelines, and policies for meaningful community participation.
In addition to promoting the participation of indigenous communities in the mining governance process, EGP’s ongoing activities in the country have strengthened capacities in intercultural and multi-stakeholder dialogue.
The EGP will build on these successes in 2022-23 by continuing engaging local communities and helping make their voices heard in mining governance. By doing so, indigenous communities impacted by lithium mining will be able to play a decisive role in protecting the environment and human rights in mining contexts.
